SCOUTING also known as the Scout movement or the Scouts, founded by Sir Robert Baden-Powell, is a voluntary non-political educational worldwide movement for young people (boys and girls) open to all without distinction of nation, gender, origin, race or creed, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method conceived by the founder, Lord Baden-Powell. Currently there are said to be over 50 million active scouts and guides worldwide.
Robert Baden-Powell (*22.02.1857, ✝08.01.1941) was the initiator and founder of the worldwide scout movement.
The entire system is still based on his ideas and specifications today. With his simple scouting method (with simple rules) he has created an educational system that is unsurpassed in ingenuity and simplicity and can be applied to all languages and cultures without any major restrictions. That is why the worldwide scouting movement is so unique!
The simple purpose of the worldwide scouting is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Through the famous scout law "A scout is friend of all people and brother of all scouts" the movement is the only independent and at the same time the largest free peace movement in the world. Founded long before the United Nations, the idea of Scouting contributes to worldwide peace and friendship among all peoples. For friendship means against racism and exclusion.
The original Scout method is a programme of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including hiking, woodcraft, singing, backpacking, and sports. Another characteristic is the Scout uniform, intending to hide all differences of social standing in any community and making for equality, with neckerchief and campaign hat or comparable headwear. Distinctive uniform insignia include the fleur-de-lis and the trefoil, as well as badges and other patches.
